You Can’t Pour from an Empty Spirit: How to Spiritually Reset When You’re Drained

by | Jun 23, 2025 | Word of Encouragement

“He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.” — Psalm 23:3 (NIV)

Whew, Girlfriend… I was running on empty and didn’t even realize it.

I was praying, but it was quiet.

Showing up, but it was performative.

Journaling, but the pages felt dry.

And somewhere in the middle of motherhood, marriage, military life, and ministry… I lost my own pulse.

Have you ever been there?

You’re showing up for everyone, spouse, kids, work, friends, and you keep telling yourself, “Just one more thing, and then I’ll rest.” But that one thing becomes five. And before you know it, your spirit is screaming for a reset you’ve been too busy to hear.

Let me be the first to say: You don’t need to hit rock bottom to get back in alignment.

What you need is a spiritual reset.

And Sis, I’ve got you.

What Is a Spiritual Reset?

A spiritual reset is not just a weekend nap or a self-care bath.

It’s when you return to the feet of God empty, surrendered, and willing to be refilled, on His terms.

For me, it started with a whisper:

“You can’t pour from what I haven’t replenished.”

I was trying to encourage others while silently drowning. Praying for clarity but still running on autopilot. And it wasn’t until I gave myself permission to slow down and sit with God, messy thoughts, tired spirit, undone to-do list and all, that I felt the fog lift.

3 Signs You Might Need a Spiritual Reset

1. You feel disconnected from everything, even your prayers.

You’re saying the words but not feeling them.

You’re reading Scripture but forgetting it the moment you close your Bible. That’s spiritual burnout, not spiritual failure.

2. You’re chronically exhausted, even after sleep.

Because spiritual fatigue doesn’t go away with a nap.

You’re tired in your mind, your spirit, your emotions, and it’s manifesting physically.

3. You’re serving from survival, not overflow.

If you’re giving out of obligation and not out of love…

If you’re snapping, shutting down, or secretly resentful…

That’s your soul saying: “Please, pour back into me.”

What Helped Me Reset (And Might Help You Too)

Here’s what I did. Nothing fancy. Just faithful.

💛 I journaled with God every morning, even when I didn’t feel like it.

Some days I wrote one sentence: “Lord, I don’t have the words, but I’m here.”

Other days, I filled pages with pain, praise, and promises.

But I showed up.

That’s why I created the 30-Day Faith & Mindset Reset Journal.

Because I know what it’s like to need structure and stillness at the same time.

Each page guided me deeper, Scripture to meditate on, space to reflect, room to be honest. And no, it didn’t change everything overnight. But it changed me. And that made all the difference.

💛 I chose ONE verse and sat in it all week.

That week, it was Psalm 23:3:

“He refreshes my soul…”

Not the news.

Not my accomplishments.

He refreshes me.

I repeated it out loud until I believed it again.

💛 I stopped glorifying “busy” and started honoring “available.”

Available to hear God.

Available to rest.

Available to be ministered to, by God, not people.

A Simple Reset Ritual (You Can Start Tomorrow)

Here’s the rhythm I followed during that 30-day reset:

🕯️ Morning (10 minutes):

Read Scripture → Journal → Pray

Ex: “Lord, what do You want me to know today?”

📿 Midday Check-in (2 minutes):

Breathe deep → Speak an affirmation

Ex: “I am covered, even when I feel scattered.”

🛏️ Evening Wind-down (10 minutes):

Reflect in your journal → Write one gratitude → Pray a release

“Lord, I release today into Your hands.”

You don’t need more time.

You need more intention.

Your Spirit Is Worth the Reset

Listen, Girlfriend:

You are not lazy.

You are not unfaithful.

You are not behind.

You are tired.

And your spirit is calling for a reset, not just for you, but for who’s attached to your healing.

Because healed women raise whole children.

Healed women change family trees.

Healed women lead other women back to the source.

Ready to Start Your Reset?

If this post hit your spirit, it’s time.

Time to pour back into the one woman you’ve been neglecting: you.

You’re not doing this alone, I’ll walk with you every page of the way.

And when your cup starts to overflow again?

You’ll look back and realize it started with one “yes.”

Let’s Pray:

God, I’m tired.

I’ve been trying to hold it all together while feeling like I’m falling apart.

Today, I give You permission to refill me.

Help me stop chasing the next thing and start sitting with the only thing that matters, You.

Guide me in this reset.

Heal me where no one sees.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
